Tuesday October 3rd, a vote will be taken by all sub-committee members for either a 9th grade campus or a second high school along with other campus decisions. The results of this vote will be used to make recommendations to the Steering Committee.

Meeting Minutes - Sept. 12th

MEETING MINUTES
September 12, 2006
Student Growth/Instructional Facilities Sub-Committee
Facility Study Committee
Tomball Independent School District
Chairman: Brent Lapsley
Co-Chairman: Rocky Fischer
Co-secretaries: SueAnne Wake and Anne Miesen
Facilitators: Dr. Darlene Blair and Huey Kinchen

1. Carrie Pearson will present material next week concerning school size refined to school
districts with size similar to Tomball ISD.
2. Kathy Matt presented current information regarding the new Creekside Park development
in The Woodlands. The projections provided by The Woodlands were identical to those
previously presented by Mr. Scheulke. The communication from the developer did state
that the only homes currently under construction are custom homes, which are very large
and will take about a year to build. Actual enrollment numbers were also presented from
two K-6 elementary schools in the Conroe ISD which cover another part of the
development. Deretchin School opened in the Fall 2005 with fewer than 300 children.
The current enrollment is now at 787. The other school opened in the Fall 2002. The
current enrollment is at 1,115.
3. SueAnne Wake presented information regarding 9th grade only schools. There are many
advantages and disadvantages. Location is a vital consideration in having a 9th grade
only campus. If it is not in close proximity to the high school then the 9th grade students
do not have access to extra-curricular activities. The number of times a student
transitions should also be a consideration. A discussion followed regarding pros and
cons on a 9th grade only campus.
4. Brent Lapsley will talk to Mayor Harrington regarding Tomball ISD’s history of utilizing
a 9th grade only campus. Ronnie Lambert will talk with Klein ISD administrators
regarding the Klein’s history of 9th grade only campus.
5. Questions were raised about the cost of building the different types of schools. Mr.
Lapsley will get this information.
6. The response from Mr. Schuelke regarding existing plans and estimated time to finalize
design, bid and build the various schools was discussed. This document can be found on
the website.
7. Population maps for 2005 and 2010 were presented by David Zuhlke and Rocky Fischer.
These maps can be found on the website. The numbers were close to the numbers
presented by Mr. Schuelke. The percentage of growth in the west and north-west part of
the district is estimated to have the greatest population increase. The south end of the
district and the east side of the district are the areas with the next biggest increase.
8. The committee is in agreement that two elementary schools will need to be built. For the
next meeting, the committee should be ready to discuss locations for these schools,
discuss the option of building a K-6 campus in The Woodlands and the initial boundaries
(zones).
9. Mr. Lapsley will request current enrollment numbers of all schools by grade levels.

Update on New High School

The Sub-Committee seems to be divided into two camps, one is pushing for a 9th grade campus and the other for a new High School.

A 9th grade campus will allow us to continue with only one High School for a few more years, but we are going to eventually need to build another High School. It looks like a 9th grade campus could extend the life of the current HS until about 2013. The problem with that is we would be maxed out at the HS and the 9th grade campus and there would not be any other options.

If we do not build a new HS during this process, we would not be able to have a new HS until the year 2015 at the earliest and probably closer to 2016 or 2017.

A new HS would provide adequate facilities well into the future, probably to the 2020-21 school year.

We are having another meeting Wednesday September 20th, at 7:00pm. If you have an opinion on the future of the Tomball ISD, please try and attend.
